Diagnostic Imaging
Our diagnostic imaging capabilities provide a non-invasive way to visualize the internal organs and bones of your pet using X-rays or ultrasound.
Conditions such as fractured bones, hip dysplasia, internal organ enlargement, and foreign body ingestion may be diagnosed with our high quality X-rays. |
|
| allows us to evaluate the internal structure of organs such as the liver, kidneys and bladder. In some cases, we may be able to avoid surgery by using ultrasound to guide needle biopsies of internal organs. |

Endoscopy
The best and most non-invasive way to diagnose diseases affecting the internal lining of the intestines is with endoscopy. Without the aid of an endoscope, such problems can only be diagnosed with an exploratory abdominal surgery and full thickness intestinal biopsy.
| Through our video endoscope our veterinarians can do a visual exam of the esophagus, stomach, upper small intestine, and colon. They can take small pinch biopsies which do not require sutures and which heal quickly with no after care. |
 |
Endoscopy can also be used to visualize and acquire samples from the trachea and upper lung bronchial passages in medium to large dogs.
In some cases, foreign bodies which have been inhaled or ingested may also be removed with the endoscope, eliminating the need for surgery. |

Electrocardiography (EKG)
Our veterinarians can evaluate your pet's heart in several ways. One valuable indicator of heart function is to measure the heart's electrical activity with an electrocardiogram.
We use a telemedicine service called cardiopet. Electrocardiograms transmitted to cardiopet are read by a Board Certified Specialist and our veterinarians receive a consultation with them regarding your pet's condition. |

Small Rigid Scope
Foreign bodies, tumors, and other problems that occur in small spaces such as nasal cavities and ear canals can pose serious problems, but are difficult to visualize and diagnose.
Our small scope allows visualization in very small spaces, like this nasal passage. |
 |
Our veterinarians have removed blades of grass from ear canals and biopsied tumors deep in nasal cavities. If your pet develops a problem like this, this little scope is a must have diagnostic tool! |

Doppler Blood Pressure
Just as in human medicine, blood pressure is a very important parameter to measure and monitor in pets. But, blood pressure measurements are more difficult to obtain in pets than in people. At Blue Springs Animal Hospital we use a doppler unit, the most accurate non-invasive method to obtain blood pressures in pets.
It is especially important to monitor blood pressure in pets with diseases like kidney disease, heart disease, and feline thyroid disease. Many of these pets will require blood pressure management to prevent further organ damage caused by high blood pressures.

Tonometry
Glaucoma in pets is a serious and very painful disease of the eye. The accurate diagnosis of glaucoma is difficult without specialized equipment. At Blue Springs Animal Hospital we use a tonometer to quickly and accurately determine if your pet's intra-ocular pressures are too high - the primary indicator of glaucoma. A drop of topical anesthetic is applied to the surface of the eye and the tonopen is gently tapped against the cornea several times. The procedure takes only seconds to perform and causes no discomfort to the patient.
