Dr Steiner grew up on a farm in rural Warren County Missouri. Farm operations included a herd of registered Limousin cattle. She was especially fond of taking on animal care responsibilities, which at times included horses, hogs, chickens, ducks, and of course dogs and cats, in addition to the cattle. Her mother says that “Susan wanted to be a veterinarian since she was very young.”
After graduation from high school, Dr Steiner completed undergraduate studies at Truman State University. She was a member of the university show cattle team and exhibited registered Gelbvieh breeding stock. Dr Steiner received certification in artificial insemination for cattle from a private firm in Columbia, Missouri, and was an active participant in genetic selection and improvement of her father's cattle herd. Upon graduation in 1993 from Truman State University, Dr Steiner worked as a doctor’s assistant at a mixed animal veterinary hospital. She also worked part time for a large registered Angus breeder, caring for and traveling with the show cattle.
In 1994 Dr Steiner married her high school sweetheart, Nick, and moved to the greater Kansas City area where he worked as a draftsman. She continued to pursue veterinary medicine by obtaining a position as a doctor’s assistant at a small animal veterinary hospital in the Red Bridge area. It was here that she was encouraged to complete requirements for admission to veterinary college. Dr Steiner gained acceptance at the University of Missouri in 1998 and earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2002.
Dr Steiner started her career as a veterinarian in the greater Kansas City area, working part time at several small animal practices. She was eager to gain employment at Blue Springs Animal Hospital after witnessing the highest quality of medical and surgical care offered to patient after patient, extensive and ongoing support staff training, a unified group of doctors, and state of the art facilities, equipment, laboratory and pharmacy. Dr Steiner joined us in 2003 as an associate veterinarian and continues to enjoy working with her colleagues and our excellent support staff.
Dr Steiner and Nick currently live in Lee's Summit, Missouri with their son, Andrew, who was born in September, 2007. When Dr Steiner is not at the practice she is trying to keep up with her toddler. The Steiner’s share their home with four feline fur children: Putty Cat, Mr. Briggs, Wrigley and Dharma.
"Thank you to Blue Springs Animal Hospital for providing such a wonderful environment to practice veterinary medicine." ~ Susan Steiner, DVM
